alternate routes (north & west)
For those of you coming from points north and west (IL, IN, OH, KY, TN, MO, MI, MN, etc), be prepared for an alternate route as Google maps places driving directions through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can check the NPS temporary road closures for current closures. Any road closure listed as US-441 or Newfound Gap means that the route through the National Park is not passable. Sometimes these narrow, windy roads are open but still covered in snow. You can check out the NWS Precipitation Table to see the snow depth.
Before arriving at Exit 407 in TN, you should call (865) 436-1200 ext. 631, as weather is unpredictable and can go from 60 and sunny to 20 and snowy within hours this time of year.
If there is a road closure due to snow/ice or you would feel safer staying off of these roads altogether, you can simply follow I-40E to Exit 27 in NC (US-74W toward Waynesville/Clyde/Atlanta/Maggie Valley/Franklin/Murphy). Then, merge onto Great Smoky Mountains Expy/US-74 W/441 N toward Cherokee after about 32 miles. You will see the John Crowe Recreational Complex sign and the Budget Inn of Whittier on the left hand side 500 yards from the exit ramp. This route is usually open in March/April.
